Liquid I.V. and Youthfulness

/ Spent this week catching up on Liquid I.V. / Unilever, experimenting with ginger powder as a supplement, and reflecting on unique traits worth developing that aren’t often discussed. Happy 4th of July!

Liquid IV / Unilever

I’ve been a fan and customer of Liquid I.V. since ~2017/2018, remembering the lemon lime and acai berry flavors. Had thought lemon-lime was slightly acidic but preferred it over acai berry. I am also a big fan of convenient single packets vs. a large bag of electrolyte powder w/scooper found on Amazon. I was curious about how the brand would expand further after its acquisition by Unilever (here). My naivety to doubt Unilever’s growth engine. More frequent sales, email/SMS marketing, an explosion of flavor variety, a rebrand (finally), and new flavors tasting quite good.

On flavors, I was curious to see if I could discern which ingredients move the needle. I had no luck except for a few unique ingredients in a few flavors.

I don’t think the FAQ on the Liquid I.V. page was as built out or current pre-acquisition, but I like how they include a relevant FAQ to each product (at some point, I just pretend the bar is low and prefer to be surprised vs. being disappointed).

I was curious if Unilever breaks out revenue and growth by brand. From my perusing, it appears to be solely by product group. Interesting to orient around each product group and respective brands, then to see how each product group is performing.

Ginger

I’ve been thinking lately about ginger’s health benefits for the immune system. Realizing I don’t find it much in my diet and seeing it sold in powder form at Trader Joe’s, I have added it to the list of items to try. May be placebo but so far feels like a +10% natural energy boost.

Being Youthful

When asked the question, “What do you look for in a new hire/partner / exceptional individual?” or ” What should you practice in your own life?” or “What are good traits to have?” one may find most answers are the same. You want someone honest, has integrity, is hard-working, caring, friendly, and so on.

I wanted to focus on this idea of being or curating youthfulness specifically.

I don’t hear it mentioned as often (potential sampling bias), but I am drawn to said benefits here of being youthful:

– Able to relate better to your kids, siblings’ kids, friends’ kids, etc.

– Cultivate curiosity

  • Part of this is learning that one need not always be too prescriptive about things. I feel consensus is to become more formal / risk-averse / rule-following over time because it is natural to think things work a certain way for a reason. I’m realizing that the only reason we have anything is because someone was risk-tolerant (or, even better, didn’t understand the risk before taking action) and took action. So, one way I might think about being more risk-tolerant is to let curiosity and information guide action and less about prescriptive processes set at some time for some reason that may or may not be rational.

– Cultivate creativity

  • This is part of the point above. Taking action in a novel space usually requires some creativity.

– This is personal, but I speculate there is some connection between “if higher youthfulness, then higher long-term happiness,” although this could be debated.

More to marinate on this, but I like how it feels as of now.
